特朗普因“中国病毒”言论被起诉

【编者按】英国《晨星报》刊文，表示特朗普因“中国病毒”言论被美国华裔民权联盟起诉，该联盟表示这一言论具有种族歧视倾向，给亚裔美国人带来了恶劣的影响。

美国前总统唐纳德·特朗普因使用诸如“中国病毒”之类的词语来形容新冠病毒而被一个华裔民权组织起诉。

美国华裔民权联盟（CACRC）提起诉讼要求赔偿近2300万美元。

该联盟称诽谤和贬损性描述对华裔美国人造成了情绪困扰，并导致了仇恨犯罪的增加。

美国各主要城市的警方的统计数据显示，新冠病毒爆发后，2020年反亚裔仇恨犯罪的报告增加了近150%。

Trump to be suedover ‘China virus’ remarks

FORMER US president Donald Trump is beingsued for millions by a Chinese-American civil rights group over the use ofterms such as “China virus” to describe Covid-19.

A lawsuit filed by the Chinese AmericanCivil Rights Coalition (CACRC) is claiming for nearly $23 million (£16m).

It alleges defamation and the infliction ofemotional distress over the derogatory descriptions, which the coalition saysled to a rise in hate crime.

Police statistics across major US citiesshowed a nearly 150 per cent rise in reports of anti-Asian hate crimes in 2020following the outbreak of coronavirus.

Mr Trump defended the language he used todescribe Covid-19, insisting that the virus “comes from China” and that he was therefore “not racist at all.”

But the World Heath Organisation (WHO)asked people not to attach locations or ethnicity to the disease, saying thiscould fuel stigmatising attitudes.

The CACRC is claiming $1 (70p) for everyAsian-American and Pacific Islander living in the US.

The money would be used to establish a museumshowcasing Asian-American and Pacific Islander contributions to the country.
